Legendary heavy metal vocalist Philip Anselmo took to the road recently for his first-ever solo tour, dubbed the “Technicians of Distortion,” which launched on July 31 in Tulsa, OK and concluded on August 20 in Atlanta, GA. On this run, Phil was joined by his backing band The Illegals, consisting of guitarist Marzi Montazeri, drummer Jose Manual Gonzalez, and bassist Steve Taylor.
Philip Anselmo & The Illegals smashed through New York City on August 16 at Gramercy Theatre, kicking off their set with a cover of Portal‘s “Black Houses.” Anselmo and crew then dove into tracks from the band’s new album Walk Through Exits Only, including “Battalion of Zero,” “Betrayed,” “Usurper Bastard’s Rant,” and the LP’s title track (just to list a few). The band also jammed out to Led Zeppelin‘s “Dazed and Confused” and sent the Gramercy Theatre crowd into headbanging fury with Pantera tunes “Domination / Hollow” and “Primal Concrete Sledge.” Phil also belted out a rendition of Agnostic Front‘s “United & Strong” and Arson Anthem‘s “Wrecked Like Clockwork.”
The series of dates saw support from Arlington, Texas thrash metal titans Warbeast and one-man industrial doom/drone project Author & Punisher.
