Mastodon, Gojira and Kvelertak brought their colossal U.S. tour (which just wrapped up this past weekend at ‘Rock On The Range’ in OH) to a jam-packed and sweltering Terminal 5 last Thursday (5/15) for a sold out showing at the Hell’s Kitchen, NYC venue.
Black ‘n’ roll export Kvelertak kicked the night off right, with a crushing set consisting of cuts from the group’s 2010 self-titled debut full-length album, along with anthems from their latest record, Meir. Frontman Erlend Hjelvik sported a gnarly taxidermied owl mask during the band’s lead-off song, ‘Åpenbaring’ (unfortunately we didn’t snag a pic of him with the mask on).
Up next were French metal masters Gojira who completely leveled Terminal 5 with their sonic grooves that included crowd favorites ‘Backbone’ and ‘Flying Whales’ taken off 2005’s From Mars to Sirius, as well as the title track off of the band’s latest offering, L’Enfant Sauvage, among others.
Georgia-based prog rock/metal giants Mastodon closed out the night with a dynamic setlist filled with tunes spanning their entire discography, including the band’s forthcoming LP, Once More ‘Round the Sun.
