Local brutal death metal legends Suffocation and Montreal face pounders Kataklysm recently launched their co-headline stretch aboard the 2014 edition of the “Carnival Of Death” tour. The North American onslaught also features performances by Jungle Rot, Pyrexia and Internal Bleeding. New York City hosted the trek’s kick off date this past Friday night (10/3) at the Gramercy Theatre.

Unfortunately we missed the supporting acts since the NYC show was an early one (to make room for a late night electronica party). We hit the venue just in time to catch Kataklysm who fired off their set with “Determined (Vows of Vengeance),” “If I Was God… I’d Burn It All” and “Like Animals” from the band’s recent LPs, Heaven’s Venom and Waiting For The End To Come, receptively. Fans were in a craze as Kataklysm bashed through other hits such as “The Ambassador of Pain,” “In Shadows & Dust” and “The Awakener.”

New York’s own heroes, Suffocation, led by the always elated and tongue-wagging Frank Mullen, filled the stage at some point before 9pm. The guys delivered a skull pounding performance that only a Suffo show can provide, inflicting auditory pain with fan-favorites like “Effigy of the Forgotten,” “Catatonia,” “Entrails of You” and “Infecting the Crypts,” as well as tunes off of the new LP, Pinnacle of Bedlam, like “Purgatorial Punishment” and “My Demise.” Towards the end of the set, Ricky Myers of Disgorge took over vocal duties for a memorable rendition of “Liege of Inveracity.” Frank also announced that Ricky would be filling in for him after a few weeks of the tour. As many fans know by now, Frank has made it known that massive touring on his part cannot be done anymore, though, this in no way means he is leaving the band. Good luck and thanks for the killer set, Frank.

Don’t miss the “Carnival of Death” in a city near you. All remaining dates are after the NYC gallery, below …
