German heavy/power metal veterans Helloween are currently embarked on a worldwide tour in support of their fifteenth studio album, My God-Given Right, which they unleashed last spring through Nuclear Blast. The North American portion of the trek commenced this past weekend in Montreal, hitting Quebec City on Monday and New York City on Tuesday night (3/1) for a grand spectacle at good ol’ PlayStation Theater in Times Square.
Being one of their biggest headline shows in The Big Apple to date, the vets did not disappoint, flooding the stage at exactly 9:10pm to their 1985 intro track “Walls of Jericho.” Wasting no time, the band dove straight into their 18-song setlist, starting off with “Eagle Fly Free” and “Dr. Stein” from 1988’s Keeper of the Seven Keys: Part II, which was directly followed by the new LP’s title-track “My God-Given Right.” Fans cheered and belted out lyrics to every song, as the energetic band – led by singer Andi Deris – shred through other fan-favorite tracks like “Steel Tormentor,” “Power” and “Forever and One (Neverland)” from 1996’s The Time of the Oath and “Mr. Torture” from 2000’s The Dark Ride.
Following a drum solo, medley consisting of “Halloween,” “Sole Survivor,” “I Can,” “Are You Metal?” and “Keeper of the Seven Keys,” and a few more fresh cuts like “Heroes” and “Lost in America,” the band disappeared backstage in anticipation of their grand encore finale. PlayStation Theater erupted in excitement and non-stop crowd surfing as the band ended their nearly 2-hour set with classics “Before the War,” “Future World” and their most notable hit “I Want Out.” The band thanked the elated Manhattan crowd as their outro track “A Tale That Wasn’t Right” blared through the main PA.
New York City newcomers THEM (ft. mems. of Symphony X, Suffocation, Coldsteel) kicked off the night, entertaining attendees with their King Diamond-esq form of heavy metal and stage presence, while performing songs from their debut concept album titled Sweet Hollow.
