Coverage: The Epiphone Revolver Music Awards 2016 at Webster Hall (12/13)
Last Tuesday (12/13), New York City hosted the 2016 and seventh annual “Revolver Music Awards” (aka the newly rechristened “Epiphone Revolver Music Awards”) at Manhattan’s renowned Webster Hall. This year’s event marked the first time the popular metal award show made its way to the east coast, since the previous six installments were held in sunny Los Angeles.
We arrived to the venue around 6PM on a chilly and already pitch black NYC evening, bumping into a huge line of fans excitedly waiting for doors to open. We immediately grabbed our press credentials and made a beeline to the acclaimed “Black Carpet.” A slew of local media, including the likes of MetalInjection, MetalSucks, Horns Up Rocks and Noisey, packed like sardines at Webster Hall’s first floor, east wing bar (where they also sometimes sell pizza!) to interview and take photos of the sea of rock and metal musicians and personalities proceeding into the ceremony.
We caught a glimpse of numerous headbanging stars on the “Black Carpet,” counting the likes of members of Anthrax, Gojira, Atreyu, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Gemini Syndrome, Nonpoint and Amaranthe.
We made our way into Webster Hall’s sold-out Grand Ballroom at 8PM, to catch the award show’s opening number, a shred-tastic performance from guitar legend Zakk Wylde. Megadeth mastermind Dave Mustaine and SiriusXM’s Jose Mangin co-hosted the event and did a fantastic and entertaining job, despite numerous technical issues including a faulty teleprompter.
Throughout the night, members of Emmure, Periphery, Suicidal Tendencies, Killswitch Engage and more presented a series of awards, including “Album of the Year” to Metallica, “Song of the Year” to Ghost, “Best Vocalist” to Austin Carlile (Of Mice & Men), “Best Drummer” to Chris Adler (Lamb of God), “Best Live Band” to Slipknot and “Best New Talent” to Avatar. Additionally, Justis David Mustaine presented his dad, Dave Mustaine, with the “Lifetime Achievement Award,” and Norman Reedus (“The Walking Dead”) awarded Anthrax with the “Revolver Innovator Award.”
While bands and industry folk schmoozed in the balcony, die-hard fans moshed and rocked out on the main floor to killer live performances courtesy of Stitched Up Heart, Lacuna Coil, Anthrax and Megadeth. The night culminated with a special “Fallen Heroes” all-star jam, featuring Ace Frehley, Bumblefoot, plus members of Butcher Babies, Pop Evil, Slipknot, Mutoid Man, Red Sun Rising and more.
All in all, the night was a huge success for Revolver Magazine and all the sponsors, promoters, record labels and publicists involved. Here’s hoping the RMAs stay in NYC for 2017!
