New Jersey’s own thrash metal vets Overkill and South Carolina-based brutal death metal squad Nile set out on a giant and mostly east coast tour on February 14, bashing and battering through a slew of popular markets. The last week of the incursion featured special guest support from melo / heavy metal warriors Amorphis and their fellow Finnish doomy metal friends in Swallow the Sun.
Overkill‘s headlining adventure ended with a major hometown show in New Jersey at Starland Ballroom this past Saturday night, March 11. An insanely packed house in Jersey united for an over five-hour show, which also featured local support from Enrage, Xenophile and We Our War. The gathered masses exploded for their local heroes in Overkill, who kicked off their set with “Mean, Green, Killing Machine” from their latest offering on Nuclear Blast, The Grinding Wheel. The band would go on to play many more cutthroat hits throughout the night, including classic gems such as “Rotten to the Core,” “Hello From the Gutter,” “Feel the Fire” and “Hammerhead,” along with a cover of Thin Lizzy‘s “Emerald” and The Subhumans‘ “F–K You.”
Nile (who now feature within its ranks guitarist / vocalist Brian Kingsland of Enthean) completely devastated the high-energy, near sold-out show, with skull fracturing shreds from their albums Annihilation of the Wicked, Black Seeds of Vengeance, Those Whom the Gods Detest, At the Gate of Sethu, In Their Darkened Shrines and their latest opus What Should Not Be Unearthed.
Unfortunately and because the show was running late, both Amorphis and Swallow the Sun were forced to play shorter sets, though this didn’t keep the NJ crowd from moshing to their heart’s content during their sets, with non-stop crowd surfing and circle pits dominating the evening’s activities and putting house security and staff in a state of unease.
Both Amorphis and Swallow the Sun were supposed to play lengthier sets in New York City at Le Poisson Rouge tonight (3/14), but due to winter storm “Stella,” the show was postponed to a future date TBA. Both Finnish acts are scheduled to invade Long Island’s Revolution on April 23 [tix].
