Photos: Mastodon, Eagles of Death Metal & Russian Circles wasted Hammerstein Ballroom (5/11)
Atlanta heavy metal behemoths Mastodon are in the midst of a colossal spring tour of the U.S. that commenced last month in Missoula, MT. Featuring support from California rockers Eagles of Death Metal and Chicago three-piece instrumental band Russian Circles, the jaunt made an appearance in New York City on May 11 for a nearly sold-out showing at the massive Hammerstein Ballroom.
Mastodon performed an impressive, nonstop 20-song set, choke-full of hefty tracks such as “The Wolf Is Loose,” “Crystal Skull” and “Bladecatcher” off of 2006’s Blood Mountain, “Divinations” and “Oblivion” from 2009’s Crack the Skye, as well as a healthy mix of older hits off of Remission (2002) and Leviathan (2004), plus plenty of fresh cuts from the band’s recently released Emperor of Sand LP, counting songs “Sultan’s Curse,” “Ancient Kingdom,” “Andromeda” and more.
Eagles of Death Metal laid out tracks from their LPs Peace Love Death Metal, Death by Sexy and Zipper Down, in addition to cover songs from Boots Electric and David Bowie. Meanwhile, Russian Circles set off the night by performing select numbers from their Empros, Guidance, Station and Memorial full-lengths.
