British progressive rock act Anathema are in the midst of a string of exclusive headlining engagements in North America in support of their recently released eleventh studio album, The Optimist on Kscope. Featuring support from LA rockers Silver Snakes, the nine-date run was set in motion last week in Baltimore, with New York City hosting the trek’s second stop at the Gramercy Theatre on August 17.

A packed house in NYC enjoyed a slew of fresh songs from The Optimist, including tracks “Leaving It Behind,” “Endless Ways,” “Can’t Let Go,” “Springfield” and more. Tracks off of 2012’s Weather Systems, such as “Untouchable” (part 1 & 2), “The Storm Before the Calm” and “The Beginning and the End,” and anthems from 2010’s We’re Here Because We’re Here, “Thin Air” and “Universal,” caused excitement in the pit and, with verbal encouragement from brothers Vincent and Daniel Cavanagh, compelled fans in the back seating section up on their feet.

Cuts from 2003’s A Natural Disaster, like “Closer” and the LP’s title-track resonated through the Manhattan venue, with one of the evening’s impressive highlights coming during “A Natural Disaster,” as all stage lights were dimmed off and fans were requested to take out their phones and help illuminate the enchanting vocalist Lee Douglas. Anathema also performed 2014’s “Distant Satellites” and ended their set with “Lost Control,” “Destiny” and “Fragile Dreams” from the classic Alternative 4 record.

Silver Snakes warmed up the crowd with songs from their new effort Saboteur and more. Scroll down below for photo coverage from the Gramercy Theatre show. For all upcoming Anathema concerts, go here.
