Royal Blood

English hard rock giants Royal Blood are in the process of wrapping up a brief spring east coast jaunt featuring support from fellow UK psych-rock troop Turbowolf.

The outing launched with two sold-out back-to-back shows at the gritty Brooklyn Steel in Williamsburg, Brooklyn on May 28th and 29th. We caught the first night in NYC where the duo, consisting of singer / guitarist Mike Kerr and drummer Ben Thatcher, made their way to the stage to intro track “Get Down Tonight” by KC and The Sunshine Band, and immediately exploded into their super popular single “Figure It Out.” Kerr could be seen rocking out with a fractured foot, which he apparently hurt during the band’s performance at ‘Boston Calling’ just a few days prior.

Injuries aside, the boys delivered a rocking good time, continuing their set with How Did We Get So Dark? rippers “Where Are You Now?” and another huge favorite, “Lights Out.” The band’s lighting design consisted of a string of vertical LED tubes positioned upstage, constantly flashing to the beat and saturating the stage in reds and blues during certain occasions. Additionally, the act have recently integrated backup singers to their live shows to help add extra flavor to already jam-packed hits like “I Only Lie When I Love You,” “Look Like You Know,” “Sleep,” and “How Did We Get So Dark?.”

Other highlights from the set included Thatcher‘s pounding drum solo towards the end of “Little Monster,” plus the inclusion of numerous songs off of the pairing’s 2014 debut self-titled record, counting “Come on Over,” “You Can Be So Cruel,” “Blood Hands,” “Loose Change,” epic closer “Out of the Black,” and more.

Turbowolf kicked off the night with their groovy set made up of jams from their efforts The Free Life, Two Hands, and Turbowolf, playing numbers “Cheap Magic,” “Solid Gold,” “Rabbit’s Foot,” “Let’s Die,” and a few others.

Royal Blood‘s spring tour ends at ‘Firefly Music Festival’ in Dover, DE on June 16th. Following that, the band are reportedly going to start working on a new full-length album.
