Metal Allegiance – the heavy metal all-star band consisting of core members David Ellefson (Megadeth), Mike Portnoy (ex-Dream Theater), Alex Skolnick (Testament) and Mark Menghi, along with special guests Chuck Billy (Testament), Philip Anselmo (Down), Gary Holt (Slayer), Charlie Benante (Anthrax) and many others – released their debut self-titled album via Nuclear Blast last week. The collective celebrated the released of their new LP with a special record release party at Best Buy Theater in Times Square on 9/17, performing a slew of covers from the likes of Iron Maiden, S.O.D., Sepultura, Metallica, Dio and more.
At some point during that evening, the band quietly added another record release bash in NYC for the following night (9/18) at the much smaller Saint Vitus in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Metal Allegiance core members with special guest vocalist Mark Osegueda (Death Angel) packed the intimate Vitus stage to perform a show that was billed as a 1978 Van Halen/Black Sabbath tour recreation. The supergroup did not disappoint, playing the first half of VH‘s self-titled album and all of BS‘ Master of Reality, but not before they ripped through covers of Judas Priest, Accept, Maiden and others. Just like they did at the BBT gig, the band ended their set with a rendition of Metallica‘s “Seek & Destroy.”
