Satanic heavy rockers Ghost kicked off their “Black To The Future” tour last week in Silver Spring, MD with help from London-based psychedelic rock act Purson. The junket cruised through New York City this past Sunday night (9/27) for a liturgy at Terminal 5, located deep in the bowels of Hell’s Kitchen.

A packed house at T5 eagerly awaited as holy smoke began to fill the air at around 9PM, while Allegri‘s somber and bleak “Miserere mei, Deus” track played through the main PA, serenely setting the mood for Ghost‘s triumphant return to the NYC spotlight. As with previous tours, Papa and his fiends signaled their readiness by ushering in their intro song, “Masked Ball,” by the great English composer Jocelyn Pook. Following a roar from the Manhattan audience, Ghost kicked off their set with the one-two punch of “Spirit” and “From the Pinnacle to the Pit” (which saw a video premiere at Vitus last month) from their just released third studio opus, Meliora.

The Swedish occultists followed with a block of songs from their first two LPs, Opus Eponymous and Infestissumam, offering the likes of “Ritual,” “Con Clavi Con Dio,” “Per Aspera ad Inferi,” “Stand by Him” and others. Plenty of newer cuts such as “Majesty,” “Circle,” “Devil Church,” “He Is,” “Absolution” and “Mummy Dust” also made it into the band’s 19-song set. Like they did in Brooklyn over the summer, the group chanted unplugged renditions of “Jigolo Har Megiddo,” “Ghuleh/Zombie Queen” and Roky Erickson‘s “If You Have Ghosts,” with a stripped down Papa, robe-less and decked out in a tuxedo and white gloves. The night’s encore consisted of “Monstrance Clock” with “The Host of Seraphim” outro.

Purson launched the night with their 60s/70s influenced psyche-rock, dishing out songs from their impending Desire’s Magic Theatre LP on Spinefarm Records.
