Fresh off a Grammy nod for their track “512” from their newest album VII: Sturm und Drang, Richmond-based heavy metal behemoths Lamb of God recently embarked on a colossal winter headline tour across the US, with help from support acts Anthrax, Deafheaven and Power Trip. The ongoing trip landed in New York City at a sold-out Hammerstein Ballroom this past Monday night, January 25th (rescheduled from 1/23).
Texas fivesome Power Trip kicked off the night with their punky, thrashy and completely devastating form of auditory discharge – immediately initiating the first pit of the night. Buzzworthy post-metal act Deafheaven hit the stage next, adding diversity to the mostly thrash/heavy filled lineup, notably winning over the already frantic Manhattan crowd. New York’s own pioneers Anthrax followed with their usual crushing set; this one consisting of fan-favorites, brand new tracks, a handful of covers, and even a tribute to metal legends Dio and Dimebag. Metal heavyweights Lamb of God closed out the night, completely laying waste to a rabid and crazed ballroom, igniting ever-growing circles pits with new anthems like “Still Echoes” and “Overlord” and pummeling classic hits such as “The Subtle Arts of Murder and Persuasion,” “Now You’ve Got Something to Die For” and “Laid To Rest.”
