Leading up to the May 25th release of his long-awaited debut solo studio album on Sumerian Records titled Black Labyrinth, rocker Jonathan Davis has embarked on a lengthy North American headlining tour that kicked off last month in Portland, OR.

The journey made a stop in New York City on May 12th for a near sold-out showing at Irving Plaza, where fans erupted in joy when the Korn frontman finally hit the stage around 9:30 PM. Jonathan‘s solo band is rounded out by guitarist Chris Nix, upright bassist Brian Allen, keyboardist Sven Martin, violinist / backing vocalist Emilio “Zef” China and drummer Ray Luzier (also of Korn), who synched well together as they helped introduce new songs off the impending LP to loyal New York fans.

With a stage covered in blood red lighting for the entirety of their set, the band launched into fresh songs “Underneath My Skin,” and “Everyone,” which the audience were very much into as they swayed back-and-forth in the crowd. The pit intensified throughout the evening as Jonathan went on to perform a trio of tracks from 2007’s Alone I Play, dishing out “Forsaken,” “Slept So Long,” and “System,” three tracks that also appeared on the 2002 film Queen of the Damned.

Davis performed a total of eleven songs off Black Labyrinth before the night was over, with songs like “Final Days,” “What You Believe,” “Basic Needs,” “Medicate”, plus closers “What It Is” and “Happiness,” and more captivating the East Village club. Another highlight from the night was JD‘s interpretation of Neil Diamond‘s “Love on the Rocks,” which showed the singer’s passive, softer side.

New Jersey’s own post-hardcore crew Palisades provided direct support, getting the crowd pumped with songs “Through Hell,” “Better Chemicals,” “Memories” and more from their 2017 self-titled third effort. It was quite the sight to watch backing vocalist / bassist Brandon Elgar shred with what seemed to be three broken fingers. As a bonus, NYC’s own alt-rock unit Kings Bounty set off the show.
