This year’s incarnation of the Generation Axe tour, featuring guitar masters Steve Vai, Zakk Wylde, Yngwie Malmsteen, Nuno Bettencourt, and Tosin Abasi, is currently underway, after kicking off early November in Oakland, CA.
The 32-show spectacle landed in Long Island on December 4th at the NYCB Theatre at Westbury, where the powergroup performed in the round in front of a full house. The set started with all five guitar pros onstage jamming out to the classic Focus track “Hocus Pocus,” and eventually throughout the beefed up concert, each musician stood front and center and played a condensed set of their best material with help from their Generation Axe brethren.
Abasi performed material from his band Animals as Leaders like tracks “Tempting Time” and “Physical Education,” Bettencourt dished out songs from his long-running act Extreme like “Get the Funk Out” and a kick-ass medley, meanwhile Wylde ripped through Black Sabbath and Gary Moore covers. Generation Axe mastermind Vai caused a ruckus with favorite “For The Love Of God,” plus The Edgar Winter Group song “Frankenstein,” and more. Malmsteen closed out with “Black Star,” among other gems. The entire band flooded the stage for set closer “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen, marking the end of a tremendous night.
The Generation Axe tour concludes in LA at The Wiltern on December 18 (full details). More exclusive shots from LI continue below.
