In anticipation of their new full-length effort titled Gold & Grey (due 6/14 via Abraxan Hymns), proggy/sludgy metallers Baroness recently embarked on a co-headline trek with blackened post-metal act Deafheaven and featuring opening support from the genre defying Zeal & Ardor, which officially closed out at New York City’s Terminal 5 on April 12th.

Baroness brought a pair of fresh tunes to the Big Apple, with their show-closing set featuring the mind-expanding “Borderlines” and the multi-layered “Seasons,” some of the band’s most venturous material to date, with the former track seeing guitarist Gina Gleason adding vocal harmony alongside frontman John Baizley. The band’s set in NYC also featured huge favorites like “A Horse Called Golgotha,” “March to the Sea,” “Chlorine & Wine,” “Shock Me,” “The Sweetest Curse,” closer “Take My Bones Away,” and more from their previous LPs: Purple, Yellow & Green, and Blue Record. The dominant “Isak” (the only tune they performed off their debut full-length, Red Album) earned the penultimate spot on the band’s 14-song demonstration.

Deafheaven delivered popular tracks of their own during their 7-song performance, which included songs “Brought to the Water,” “Honeycomb,” “Canary Yellow,” “Dream House,” and a few others from their last three albums. Absent was material from their first record Roads to Judah, though they did pull out new song “Black Brick,” a b-side from last year’s Ordinary Corrupt Human Love.

Zeal & Ardor intensified the atmosphere early on in the evening, bringing music from 2018’s Stranger Fruit and 2016’s Devil Is Fine alive with gripping numbers like “Gravedigger’s Chant,” “Don’t You Dare,” “Come On Down,” “Blood in the River,” and a handful of other melodies.
