Florida alt-rock band Anberlin are in the process of wrapping up a U.S. summer headlining tour that kicked off in June with help from San Francisco proggy rockers I the Mighty.
The jaunt landed in New York City for a two-night-stand at Irving Plaza on July 6 and 7, shows that marked the venue’s last concerts before closing for an eight-month upgrade. We caught the first of two gigs, which featured a hefty 21-song display from Anberlin, with the beginning of the band’s set being littered with hits from their second and third albums: Never Take Friendship Personal (2005) and Cities (2007), delivering tracks “(Début),” “Godspeed,” “Never Take Friendship Personal,” “Paperthin,” “Hello Alone,” “Adelaide,” “Inevitable” and more.
Sprinkled into Anberlin‘s set were songs off Blueprints for the Black Market (2003) like “Readyfuels,” cuts off New Surrender (2008) such as “The Resistance” and “Feel Good Drag,” plus select numbers off their remaining LPs: Dark Is the Way, Light Is a Place (2010), Vital (2012) and Lowborn (2014).
I the Mighty performed tracks from their three Equal Vision full-lengths: Satori (2013), Connector (2015) and Where the Mind Wants to Go / Where You Let It Go (2017), warming up the crowd with songs “Psychomachia,” “Pet Names,” “Four Letter Words” and others. Highlights include a performance of “The Dreamer” off their EP Karma Never Sleeps (2012), and the inclusion of their new standalone single “Cave In.”
