Former Mastodon guitarist Brent Hinds dies at 51 following tragic accident

Brent Hinds, renowned for his guitar and vocal work with Atlanta heavy metal band Mastodon, has sadly passed away at the age of 51 following a tragic accident. The band shared the news earlier today (August 21st) through their official social channels.

“We are in a state of unfathomable sadness and grief… last night Brent Hinds passed away as a result of a tragic accident. We are heartbroken, shocked, and still trying to process the loss of this creative force with whom we’ve shared so many triumphs, milestones, and the creation of music that has touched the hearts of so many. RIP Brent.”

According to Atlanta News First, Hinds tragically died overnight in Atlanta following a collision between his Harley-Davidson motorcycle and a BMW SUV. Police reports indicate that the SUV’s driver failed to yield while making a turn at the intersection of Memorial Drive and Boulevard.

The Atlanta Police Department’s preliminary investigation states, “On 08/20/25 around, 11:35pm, officers responded to an accident at the intersection of Memorial Dr. SE & Boulevard SE. Upon arrival, officers located an unresponsive male who was involved in the collision. The male appeared to be operating a Harley Davidson during the time of collision.”

They continue, “Medical personnel pronounced the male deceased. The other driver involved, a female who occupied a BMW SUV remained on scene. The APD Accident Investigations Unit responded to the scene to determine the circumstances. Preliminary investigation indicates the male was traveling West on Boulevard. The female operating the BMW SUV failed to yield while turning left and collided into the male victim who was operating the Harley Davidson. The investigation remains active at this time.”

Hinds, along with drummer/vocalist Brann Dailor, guitarist/vocalist Bill Kelliher, bassist/vocalist Troy Sanders, and original lead singer Eric Saner, formed Mastodon in 2000. Saner departed shortly after the band’s formation, but the remaining lineup stayed intact for 24 years, until Hinds stepped away in March 2025. He contributed to all eight of Mastodon’s studio albums and spent years touring the globe with the band.

Throughout his career, Hinds was involved in several side projects, including Fiend Without a Face, Four Hour Fogger, Giraffe Tongue Orchestra, Legend of the Seagullmen, The Blood Vessels, and West End Motel.

While with Mastodon, he also helped compose the original score for the 2010 film Jonah Hex, showcasing the band’s ability to blend their signature heaviness with cinematic atmosphere.
