Michael Gibbons Jr., recognized for his contributions to the NY-based crossover thrash band Leeway, has passed away, though no cause of death has been revealed.
Michael’s family disclosed the somber news earlier today, December 28th, stating, “It is with great love and sadness that I [Joe Gibbons, Michael’s brother] and my sister in law Lisa Moakley Gibbons, and my sister Deirdre Mullen have to share the passing away of our youngest brother and Lisa’s husband, Michael Gibbons Jr. last night 12/27/23.”
They added, “A phenomenally gifted guitarist and music innovator has lain down to rest, but his music will live on in the hearts of his legions of Leeway and Black Ice fans. Please, at this time, respect ours and Lisa’s privacy during this most difficult time. Arrangements to follow, thank you for your understanding.”
Tributes for Gibbons have poured in through social media, with The New York Hardcore Chronicles Page on Facebook expressing, “R.I.P. Mike Gibbons (Leeway). He is remembered for his lead guitar work on the seminal and iconic Leeway crossover albums ‘Born To Expire’ and ‘Desperate Measures.’ This one stings; he will be sorely missed. Your music will live forever.”
Sal of Sworn Enemy shared his sentiments, stating, “[Michael was] such a good dude. One of the originators of hardcore/thrash crossover. Leeway always in my top 10 of greatest bands. He will surely be missed. My condolences to his family and friends.”
Former Leeway drummer Tony Fontao posted, “With my heart broken, I really don’t have words to express what a wonderful human being Michael was, a good friend and a very close partner by the time we were recording Born To Expire. I will miss you forever bro, we made history together, and I’m sure our music will ecoes forever trought generations. Rest in Peace brother.”
RIP, Michael.
