Coal Chamber drummer Mike “Mikey” Cox has announced that he will miss the band’s upcoming performances at Sick New World Texas and House of Blues Anaheim after suffering a broken femur in a basketball accident.
Cox shared the news in a statement posted to Coal Chamber’s social media accounts, explaining that he sustained the injury while playing a pickup basketball game with his son.
“I suffered a nasty fall playing a pick up basketball game with my son,” Cox wrote. “I drove in for the game winning shot (which I made BTW!) but a collision with another parent sent me crashing to the concrete, shattering my femur.”
The drummer underwent surgery to repair the injury, which required three pins, and said he will be unable to walk for at least six weeks.
Cox also noted that his previous cancer treatments have affected his bone strength, making the injury particularly serious.
“After everything my body has endured from chemo, radiation and 3 surgeries, my bones are fragile and couldn’t take the fall!” he explained.
Despite previously performing through injuries and cancer treatment, Cox acknowledged that he would not be able to recover in time for the upcoming concerts.
“I’ve played through fractured fingers, dislocated shoulders and cancer treatment, but this time I simply can’t overcome it in time. I’m absolutely crushed to miss these shows and was determined not to let them get cancelled.”
Davier Perez will fill in on drums for the affected performances. Cox expressed confidence in his replacement, describing Perez as someone he has worked with for years.
“My boy Davier Perez will be filling in for me. He’s been with me for years, has my complete trust, and is basically the 5th member of Coal Chamber. I know he’s going to KILL IT!”
Cox added that he hopes to attend the Halloween performance in Anaheim as a spectator if his recovery allows.
Reflecting on his recent health challenges, the drummer remained optimistic about his recovery and the band’s future.
“I’ve fought my way through cancer, and I’ll fight my way through this too,” he wrote. “I WILL BE BACK! Nothing will stop me! Next year is going to be HUGE for Coal Chamber!”
Coal Chamber’s upcoming performances are expected to proceed with Perez behind the drum kit.
