Norwegian progressive/power metal band Communic have announced the death of longtime bassist and founding member Erik Mortensen.
The band shared the heartbreaking news on social media, revealing that Mortensen passed away on July 14 following a short illness. He was a member of Communic from 2003 until stepping away from the band just last month due to health issues.
“It is with profound sadness that we have to share the heartbreaking news that our longtime bassist, brother, and dear friend, Erik Mortensen, passed away last night (14.07.26) after a short time of illness,” the band wrote.
“For more than two decades, Erik’s musicianship, dedication, and friendship helped shape this band into what it is today, but above all, we have lost someone we loved deeply.”
“Our thoughts are with Erik’s family, loved ones, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.”
“Rest in peace, Erik. You will never be forgotten!”
Just weeks before his passing, Communic announced that Mortensen had stepped down after 22 years with the band to focus on his health. At the time, the group described him as an essential part of Communic’s journey, thanking him for more than two decades of dedication, musicianship, and friendship while expressing hope for his recovery.
In his farewell statement, Mortensen thanked his bandmates, collaborators, and fans around the world for their unwavering support throughout his career, saying the memories and friendships he gained through Communic would stay with him forever.
Mortensen’s passing comes as Communic were preparing new music and plans for their upcoming “Waves Over The North” tour later this year.
We extend our deepest condolences to Erik Mortensen’s family, friends, bandmates, and everyone affected by his passing. Rest in peace.
