Drosera bassist René Maza hospitalized with renal failure, GoFundMe launched

Drosera bassist René Maza has been hospitalized with renal failure stemming from nephrotic syndrome and complications from diabetes, according to a GoFundMe campaign launched to help with his medical expenses and recovery.

The fundraiser states that Maza developed edema in his legs that made walking difficult, while his cholesterol and blood pressure reached dangerous levels. He is now receiving ongoing care involving nephrology, endocrinology, ophthalmology, physical therapy and orthopedics, in addition to regular primary care visits.

According to the campaign, Maza’s nephrologist has told him that he will likely need a kidney transplant within the next five years. His current treatment is aimed at slowing the decline of his kidney function and delaying the need for dialysis or transplantation.

“The nephrologist said today that he will need a kidney transplant within the next five years and that all the treatments he’s undergoing is to delay the decline of the kidneys before dialysis or transplant,” the fundraiser reads. “The waiting list for a harvested organ donor is 5-6 years. He suggested finding a living donor.”

Maza has also been unable to return to work following his hospitalization and subsequent medical appointments. The GoFundMe was organized to help support him financially while he continues treatment and recovery.

“He’s a blessing to anyone who meets him, never asking for anything in return, but now he could use some of that blessing to return as I know it will,” the campaign states.

Those wishing to help can donate through the GoFundMe campaign.

We wish Maza the best as he continues his recovery.
