Glenn Hughes retires from touring, cancels live shows due to heart surgery

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Glenn Hughes has announced his retirement from touring and live performances after revealing he must undergo another open-heart surgery.

The legendary vocalist and bassist shared the news through his official social media channels, explaining that recent medical evaluations led his doctors to recommend the procedure and that stepping away from the stage was the only option.

In a statement, Hughes wrote: “This past year, I’ve had some health issues. The results from numerous MRIs, CT scans, and an echocardiogram have alerted my medical team, that I need another open-heart surgery. I really have no option and no choice as health is my number one priority. Grateful to have been chosen with a life full with the gift of music… Thank you for walking beside me.”

The announcement also confirms that all upcoming live performances have been canceled as Hughes focuses on his health and recovery.

Hughes has enjoyed a career spanning more than five decades, earning acclaim as the bassist and vocalist for Deep Purple during the band’s classic Mk III and Mk IV eras before going on to front or perform with acts including Trapeze, Black Country Communion, California Breed, Black Sabbath, The Dead Daisies, and countless solo projects.

In 2016, Hughes was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Deep Purple.
