Guitarist Reece Scruggs has confirmed his departure from Machine Head, sharing a heartfelt message reflecting on his time with the band and expressing gratitude toward frontman Robb Flynn for supporting him through a difficult period in his personal life.
In a lengthy social media post, Scruggs revealed that his time with Machine Head came to an end after he stepped away to be with his father following a serious medical diagnosis.
“The last time I was face to face with Robb we were in a Starbucks in Mexico City and I was sobbing my eyes out about my dad’s diagnosis,” Scruggs recalled. “I told him I had to go home and be with him. I had Robb’s support and understanding before I could get the words out.”
Scruggs explained that while Flynn and the Machine Head crew supported his decision, the circumstances surrounding his departure made for a difficult ending to his time with the group.
However, the guitarist recently had an opportunity to reconnect with Flynn when the frontman invited him to attend a San Francisco 49ers football game, allowing the two to close that chapter on a more positive note.
“Fast forward to just a few weeks ago and Robb gives me the opportunity to fly out, go to the game, and put an end to my chapter in MH on a positive note,” Scruggs wrote.
“Being an actual member, touring the world, and releasing a record with Machine Head is a badge of honor I will carry with me forever, and the band and crew will always have my support.”
Scruggs also praised Flynn for his friendship and understanding during one of the most challenging periods of his life.
“The Robb Flynn I got to know is the kind of guy who listened to me. Understood me. Pushed me. Encouraged me. Robb Flynn had my back and supported me in the darkest time in my life.”
He concluded his message by writing, “And with that, a chapter has ended. Time to turn the page.”
Scruggs joined Machine Head in 2022 and contributed to the band’s 2025 album, UNATØNED. He previously played guitar for Havok.
Machine Head have not announced a permanent replacement for Scruggs.
