GWAR have released an HD remastered version of their “School’s Out” music video ahead of the 20th anniversary reissue of Beyond Hell, arriving September 25 via the band’s Pit Records.
The band’s cover of the Alice Cooper classic originally appeared on Beyond Hell, which was released in 2006 and produced by Devin Townsend. The upcoming deluxe edition has been remastered by Paul Logus and marks the album’s first-ever vinyl release.
The reissue also includes a previously unreleased outro recorded during the original Beyond Hell sessions.
Reflecting on his work with GWAR, Townsend commented: “I had been a GWAR fan since I was a kid. I loved the freedom, the metal, the spectacle, and the passion that went into it all.”
Townsend recalled meeting late GWAR frontman Dave Brockie while the two were touring together and eventually convincing him to let him work on the record.
“I met Brockie on a tour we did together and, after cornering him in an elevator basically telling him I’d work for free, I found myself co-producing ‘Beyond Hell.’ Dave and Corey came to Vancouver to stay with me, and we recorded at Profile Studios. The drums and basic tracks were done at Slave Pit in Richmond, Virginia, and the whole process took about three months.”
He added, “GWAR were, and are, an amazing combination of artistic freedom, absurdity, and hard work bundled up with metal and performance. Loved them then, love them now.”
The 20th anniversary edition will be available on CD and 180-gram vinyl, with the vinyl housed in a tri-fold jacket that unfolds into an inverted cross. The limited-edition vinyl variants offered through GWAR’s store have already sold out, though the album will also be available through select retailers beginning September 25.
