Former Slipknot drummer Jay Weinberg has released a new collaborative single, “Drown Fountain,” featuring Canadian duo Softcult.
The track takes Weinberg in a different musical direction, leaning into shoegaze and atmospheric textures instead of the heavier sound he’s known for. It also marks his first recorded lead vocal performance, joined by Softcult vocalist Mercedes Arn-Horn.
Weinberg said he first began writing “Drown Fountain” in 2013 but struggled to finish it until he connected with Softcult. “I’ve never sang before, I’ve always had my loud drums to ‘protect me’ in a way,” he said, calling the collaboration “an artistic dream.”
“Drown Fountain” follows Weinberg’s recent collaborative singles “Sandstone,” featuring George Clarke of Deafheaven, and “Drone Operator,” featuring NOWHERE2RUN. All three releases feature artwork by artist Paul Romano.
Weinberg will also appear behind the kit on Fuming Mouth’s upcoming album The Ringing Bell, due July 17. Recorded with producer Kurt Ballou, the album includes the previously released singles “A Blaze of Nihilism” and “Cheat Death.”
