Testament frontman Chuck Billy recently discussed his battle with cancer and how the experience helped shape the band’s future during an appearance on SiriusXM’s Trunk Nation with Eddie Trunk.
Billy, who was diagnosed with cancer more than 25 years ago, explained that he continues to undergo annual checkups and has become more conscious of his health since recovering.
“I get my checkups once a year,” Billy said. “I’m really health-conscious now, doing things, trying to eat clean and just do the right thing.”
The singer also reflected on why he chose to revisit the experience after so many years, explaining that his illness ultimately helped reconnect him with former Testament bandmates and brought members of the Bay Area metal scene together.
“I would have never found my way back to Alex, Louie, and Greg if I didn’t get sick, and we wouldn’t have the Testament where we are today if I didn’t go through that,” Billy said.
He also recalled the support he received from fellow Bay Area bands, including Exodus, Death Angel and Forbidden, who came together for a benefit concert during his illness.
Billy believes the experience not only helped him return to Testament but also encouraged other bands to continue making music.
“It was just something that I had to go through to get me back to Testament and inspire some other bands to stick with it,” he said.
