Venom frontman and bassist Conrad “Cronos” Lant has died.
The legendary metal band announced his passing on social media today (October 1). A cause of death has not been revealed.
“It is with profound sadness and broken hearts that we share the news that Conrad ‘Cronos’ Lant has passed away,” Venom said.
Cronos spent more than four decades at the heart of Venom and helped shape the sound of extreme metal through landmark releases including Welcome to Hell, Black Metal, At War With Satan and Possessed. The band’s 1982 album Black Metal would ultimately lend its name to the genre, while Venom’s early work proved highly influential on generations of thrash, death and black metal bands.
In their tribute, Venom reflected on Cronos’ impact, stating: “VENOM never followed the rules. They forged their own path. And Conrad was there at the centre of it all — uncompromising, fearless and unmistakable.”
Cronos’ son Nathan also shared a message thanking fans for supporting his father throughout his career.
“I want to thank all of the Legions for all of the support you have given my dad over the years,” Nathan said. “I know he really appreciated you all. He has laid down his soul, and his music will live on. The legend of Cronos will never die.”
Venom concluded their statement by thanking Cronos for the music and memories, adding: “REST IN PEACE, CONRAD. THE LEGEND LIVES ON.”
We send our condolences to Cronos’ family, friends, bandmates and fans.
