The Smashing Pumpkins kick off “The Rats In A Cage Tour” in Columbus (photos)

The Smashing Pumpkins kicked off their “The Rats In A Cage Tour” on Wednesday night (September 30) at the Schottenstein Center in Columbus, Ohio.

The 28-date run features two distinct sets, with the first celebrating the 30th anniversary of the band’s 1995 album, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, while the second spans nearly four decades of their catalog.

The opening-night set included Mellon Collie favorites “1979,” “Bullet With Butterfly Wings,” “Tonight, Tonight,” “Zero” and “Muzzle,” along with the return of several songs that had not been performed live in years. “Cupid de Locke” and “Galapogos” were played for the first time since 2008, “Fuck You (An Ode to No One)” returned for the first time since 2007, and “By Starlight” was performed for the first time since 2010.

The second half of the show featured the live debuts of “Machina, Machina,” “Sojourner” and “Jesus Is the Sun,” alongside “Disarm,” “Ava Adore,” “Mayonaise,” “Today,” “Cherub Rock” and more.

“The Rats In A Cage Tour” continues October 2 at TD Garden in Boston and will hit Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on October 4. The run continues across North America through November, including a November 12 stop at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles and a November 14 appearance at Darker Waves Festival in Huntington Beach, California.
