Acid Bath and Obituary bring heavy night to The Rooftop at Pier 17 in NYC (photos)

Acid Bath brought their long-awaited return to New York City on August 21, taking over The Rooftop at Pier 17 for a headlining performance with Florida death metal veterans Obituary.

The show was originally scheduled to feature Thou as the opening act, but the band canceled all of their upcoming performances just days before the NYC date due to a family emergency. That left Obituary to kick off the evening before Acid Bath took the stage against the Manhattan skyline.

Obituary delivered a 12-song set drawing from throughout their career, opening with the instrumental “Redneck Stomp” before moving into “Sentence Day” and “A Lesson in Vengeance.”

The set also included “The Wrong Time,” “Visions in My Head” and “Dying,” along with the pairing of “Chopped in Half” and “Turned Inside Out.” The band paid tribute to Celtic Frost with a cover of “Circle of the Tyrants” before closing out the night with a particularly old-school stretch featuring “War,” “I’m in Pain” and the title track from their 1989 debut, Slowly We Rot.

Acid Bath followed with a 10-song set heavily drawing from their two studio albums, 1994’s When the Kite String Pops and 1996’s Paegan Terrorism Tactics.

The Louisiana sludge metal outfit opened with “Tranquilized” before launching into “Bleed Me an Ocean” and “Venus Blue,” the latter dedicated to late bassist Audie Pitre.

“The Bones of Baby Dolls” followed, while “Dead Girl” was performed in its Agents of Oblivion version. The remainder of the set included “The Mortician’s Flame,” “New Death Sensation” and “Graveflower” before Acid Bath closed the NYC performance with “Paegan Love Song” and “The Blue.”
