Godflesh have released their new album, Decay, today via Relapse Records. The band have also shared album closer “Consume Me.”
Decay marks Godflesh’s 10th studio album and follows 2023’s Purge. According to Justin Broadrick, the six tracks on the new record originated during the same sessions that produced Purge.
“Decay was born from the same sessions as Purge,” Broadrick explained. “It was one huge pool of songs. I picked what I felt was appropriate for what I wanted to achieve with Purge, with the intention of releasing the songs that didn’t fit as a new album within a year of Purge being released.”
The album also arrives as Godflesh approach the end of their run. Decay is described as the band’s penultimate album, with Broadrick indicating that health issues have made continuing Godflesh physically unsustainable.
Earlier this year, Broadrick underwent major abdominal surgery. He said the recordings for Decay, including the vocals, had been completed before the procedure, although portions of the album were recorded while he was dealing with a hernia.
“As Godflesh’s active tenure comes to a close,” Broadrick said of moving forward, “I now wish to move out of its constraints, move on creatively with heavy/ugly music to new ground.”
Godflesh formed in 1988 and currently consists of Broadrick and bassist Ben Green. Decay follows a catalog that includes Streetcleaner, Pure, Hymns, A World Lit Only By Fire, Post Self and Purge.
