Finnish melodic death metal band Insomnium have released their tenth studio album, Netherworlds, alongside a music video for “The Hour Grows Late,” featuring guest appearances from Amorphis members Tomi Joutsen, Tomi Koivusaari and Santeri Kallio.
The video was directed by Jari Heino of Coldstore Productions, while the song explores themes of loss, mortality and remembrance.
“‘The Hour Grows Late’ falls on the more epic side of the Insomnium spectrum, perhaps alongside classics like ‘Pale Morning Star’ and ‘Godforsaken,'” guitarist Markus Vanhala explained. “It’s a longer adventure in music, venturing a little further into the progressive dark side of the album’s moon.”
He continued, “We’re paying respect to the people who have fallen before us while we’re left alone in the dark and cold, with only two companions by our side: misery and sorrow. The new album deals with themes of loss, growing old, and missing all the people and creatures who have left us behind and headed to the Netherworld.”
Vanhala also discussed how the collaboration with the Amorphis musicians came together.
“I had been thinking about asking my good buddy, and band bro from Cemetery Skyline, Maverick or Goose, depending on the day, Mr. Santeri Kallio, to play an acid-trippy synth solo in the chaotic middle section of the song,” he said.
“At the same time, our producer, Miiro Varjus, came up with the idea of asking both Tomis to guest on vocals on this very same song. The fact that these two ideas came together felt like such perfect synchronicity that we simply couldn’t not make it happen.”
The video also incorporates imagery inspired by Karsikko, a memorial tree tradition in Finnish and Karelian folklore. The practice involves marking trees and hanging ribbons or strips of clothing to honor the deceased, symbolizing the boundary between the living and the dead.
Netherworlds was produced and engineered with Miiro Varjus, with mixing handled by Jens Bogren and mastering by Tony Lindgren at Fascination Street Studios. The album follows the previously released singles “Gleam in the Black” and “Shadowlife.”
Insomnium are also launching a new touring cycle in support of the record, beginning with shows in Finland. The band will join Amorphis for a North American tour in November and December, with Hinayana providing support.
The trek includes stops in Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles and other cities before wrapping up December 19 at Irving Plaza in New York City.
Following the North American run, Insomnium will reunite with Amorphis for a European tour in January and February 2027, supported by Unto Others.
Netherworlds is available now on CD, vinyl and digital platforms.
