My Chemical Romance bring long-awaited reunion tour to Barclays Center (photos)

Newark, New Jersey-based emo/rock legends My Chemical Romance are currently embarked on their much-anticipated North American reunion tour, which officially launched late last month following trek postponements in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 global pandemic. The outing landed in New York City earlier this month for back-to-back shows at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center. We caught the September 11th show, which featured opening support from Long Island’s own The Lemon Twigs and New Brunswick post-hardcore favorites Thursday.

Sunday’s show saw My Chemical Romance dish out a hefty 20-song setlist, kicking off their show with fresh track “The Foundations of Decay,” a tune that marks the band’s first new single in 8 years. “New York, hands the f**K up and down,” commanded frontman Gerard Way, who appeared with combed back hair and sporting aviator sunglasses. Keeping the momentum going and fitting for the evening, My Chemical Romance immediately followed up with “Skylines and Turnstiles,” a song which the band wrote soon after the September 11 attacks. Mega-hit track “I’m Not Okay (I Promise)” appeared early in the evening, causing an absolute uproar, as thousands of fans sang every note to their heart’s content.

My Chemical Romance would go on to perform additional big numbers like “Welcome to the Black Parade,” “Teenagers,” “You Know What They Do to Guys Like Us in Prison,” “Mama,” “Na Na Na (Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na)” and “Helena” during their main set. The encore was a special one as the band played the outstanding “Vampires Will Never Hurt You,” which they followed with a big surprise in the form of set closer “Desert Song,” a track the band last performed live during their May 9th, 2008 concert in NYC at Madison Square Garden.

My Chemical Romance’s reunion tour continues with shows in Florida, Texas, Colorado, California and more. Get tickets via Ticketmaster.
