SteelHeart have released their cover of Badfinger’s classic ballad “Without You,” featuring a powerful vocal performance from frontman Miljenko Matijevic and a 40-piece orchestra.
Originally recorded by Matijevic in 1996, the track remained unreleased for decades before finally being shared with fans. “Without You” offers SteelHeart’s take on the song, which has also been famously covered by artists including Harry Nilsson, Air Supply, and Mariah Carey.
“I’ve waited 30 years to give you my version of ‘Without You,’” says Matijevic. “From the dust on tapes and CDs, to the digital world of today. Heartbreak never sounded so good.”
The release continues SteelHeart’s 30th anniversary celebration of their self-titled debut album, which arrived in 1990 and helped establish the band with their signature power ballad “She’s Gone.” The band has continued revisiting their catalog through re-recordings, remixes, and orchestral releases as part of the anniversary campaign.
The new single arrives shortly after SteelHeart shared the passing of longtime bassist Kevin Chown, who played with the band for the past seven years. Chown passed away on July 6 following a battle with cancer, with the band remembering him as a dedicated musician and friend who brought his “heart and soul” to every performance and every mile on the road.
“Without You” is available now on all major streaming platforms, with the official music video set to premiere July 15 on SteelHeart’s YouTube channel.
