John Carpenter and longtime collaborators Cody Carpenter and Daniel Davies have released “The Ferryman,” the second track from their upcoming project, Cathedral.
The new song follows the previously released “Lord of The Underground” and arrives alongside a visualizer featuring previously unreleased artwork from the accompanying graphic novel.
Cathedral combines a new studio album, due out August 7 via Sacred Bones Records, with Carpenter’s first graphic novel, which will be released on August 4 through Storm King Comics. Each track on the album corresponds to a chapter in the graphic novel, with liner notes guiding listeners through the story.
Speaking about “The Ferryman,” guitarist Daniel Davies said the song “really seems to feature all three of us in a special way,” describing it as “more of an electronic metal track,” while adding that the trio wanted to make it “as heavy and driving as possible.”
Carpenter noted that while Cathedral was created to accompany the graphic novel, the music was also meant to work as a standalone listening experience. “It’s all about making the music work,” he said. “This is somewhat different sounding stuff that we’ve done,” before adding, “Put this thing on and imagine you’re watching a movie. That’s what we want you to do.”
The new single and visualizer are available now ahead of the release of Cathedral next month.
