Maynard James Keenan has undergone hip replacement surgery after suffering an injury while touring with A Perfect Circle earlier this summer.
The Tool, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer frontman revealed on social media that problems with his left hip suddenly emerged on July 3 while he was in Luxembourg with A Perfect Circle. Keenan said he woke up and attempted his usual morning workout and hike, only to find that his hip was no longer cooperating.
Keenan ultimately finished the remainder of the tour in pain and using a cane before seeking answers about the extent of the injury.
“I needed answers fast because I have s#!t to do. Many tours,” Keenan wrote.
With an extensive touring schedule ahead, Keenan said canceling the upcoming shows was not an option. He noted that between September and Christmas, he is scheduled to perform roughly 27 shows in 18 countries with three different bands: Tool, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer.
“People have purchased tickets and booked travel & lodging, most of which is probably nonrefundable,” he explained.
According to Keenan, September 1 was his cutoff for undergoing a hip replacement while still allowing enough recovery time for his upcoming commitments. His medical team in Los Angeles was ultimately able to schedule the procedure for August 26.
“Hats off to the medical team in LA,” Keenan wrote. “These wizards all aligned their wands & got me in on Aug 26th.”
The surgery comes just days before Keenan is also set to expand his business ventures in Arizona. As previously reported, Keenan and his wife, Jennifer, will open Queen B Sushi in Old Town Cottonwood on September 4.
The new restaurant joins Keenan’s growing collection of food and wine ventures in Arizona’s Verde Valley, which also includes Queen B Vinyl Café, Caduceus Cellars and Merkin Vineyards.
Despite the surgery, Keenan appears determined to keep his upcoming touring plans intact, signing off his update with the hashtag “#theshowmustgoon.”
