I recently headed out to the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, NJ, for “Weird Al” Yankovic’s “Bigger & Weirder Tour,” featuring the one and only Puddles Pity Party.
Going into the night, I wasn’t super familiar with Puddles beyond knowing him as the famous sad clown from America’s Got Talent, but by the time his set was over, I was a total fan. He turned out to be the absolute perfect opening act for a Weird Al concert, bringing an incredible blend of vaudeville, circus flair, and theatrical comedy, all powered by a genuinely impressive baritone voice.
His set was interactive, absurd, and fun for all ages. He spent a solid chunk of time wandering straight into the audience to pull fans right out of their seats to help him perform, so if you’re planning to catch him live, bring an open mind because there’s a very real chance you’ll end up on stage shredding on a cardboard guitar.
Even as a lifelong fan who grew up watching his music videos on MTV and rewatching UHF, I was blown away by the sheer size of the crowd at PNC Bank Arts Center. The venue was completely packed with a whole spectrum of fans, from full families with little kids dressed up like Weird Al to people in full clown gear and comedy lovers from every walk of life.
When Al hit the stage, he delivered a complete masterclass in comedy rock. He plowed through a massive, catalog-spanning setlist packed with iconic parodies, fan-favorite originals, and deep cuts, all while executing non-stop, lightning-fast costume changes for almost every single song.
Seeing the undisputed king of parody still performing at the absolute top of his game was incredible. He brought a level of enthusiasm, stamina, and pure fun that puts performers half his age to shame, proving that live comedy is alive, well, and capable of bringing massive audiences together.
If you ever get the opportunity to see Weird Al live, do not hesitate to grab tickets—it is guaranteed to leave you smiling from start to finish.
