Jennifer Finch, bassist, vocalist, songwriter, and founding member of influential Los Angeles rock band L7, has died following an aggressive form of brain cancer. She was 59.
Beyond her work as a musician, Finch was also a photographer, writer, and multidisciplinary artist whose contributions helped shape the Los Angeles punk scene and inspired generations of musicians and fans.
Her passing was announced by L7, who also noted the overwhelming support shown to Finch and those caring for her during her illness. The band said her loved ones have requested privacy as they mourn the loss.
L7 shared the following statement:
We are shattered by the loss of our beloved bandmate, sister and friend Jennifer Finch, whose fierce spirit, humor and boundless creativity helped shape L7 and changed all of our lives forever. Jennifer was a true original who lived entirely on her own terms, and the impact she made on music, art and everyone lucky enough to know her cannot be measured. We love her beyond words and will carry her with us always. Rest in power our dear friend.
With Love,
L7
Finch co-founded L7 in Los Angeles during the mid-1980s, helping the band become one of the defining acts of the grunge and alternative rock era. Known for albums including Bricks Are Heavy, the group built a reputation for its uncompromising blend of punk, metal, and hard rock while opening doors for women in heavy music.
Outside of L7, Finch remained active in music and the arts throughout her career, leaving behind a legacy that extended far beyond the stage.
She is survived by her family, friends, bandmates, and countless fans whose lives were touched by her music and creativity.
