Shaun Glass, the longtime guitarist known for his work with Soil, Broken Hope, Repentance, Sindrome, and several other metal projects, has died. According to multiple posts from friends and colleagues, Glass reportedly suffered a stroke.
Soil confirmed the news on social media, reflecting on Glass’ early role in the band despite their separation following his departure in 2007.
The band wrote: “We’d like to take a moment to say goodbye to our former guitarist Shaun Glass who passed away earlier today. Although we have been estranged and not on good terms since his departure in 2007, he was still an integral part of SOiL in the early years… We had many laughs and many good times back in the day. We will look back at those times with fond memories and smiles. It’s sad to hear of his passing and we would like to send his family our condolences during this time of grief.”
Tributes quickly poured in from across the metal community. Nonpoint drummer Robb Rivera remembered Glass as a close friend with an unmatched passion for heavy music: “Today we lost one of the biggest metal lifers I’ve ever known… my metal brother, Shaun Glass… Shaun had friends everywhere because he was one of the genuine ones. His passion for heavy music was contagious, and I honestly don’t know if I’ve ever met anyone who loved metal more than he did.”
Prong frontman Tommy Victor also paid tribute, recalling Glass from the early days of their careers: “I can’t believe this. First Prong tour ever was with Shaun Glass when he was with the amazing Sindrome. We were friends ever since. One of the nicest guys in metal. R.I.P.”
Gloria Cavalera also shared a tribute, remembering Glass as a loyal friend and devoted family man: “In memory of my long time friend, Shaun Glass… he wasn’t just another musician in a band. He was a loving father and husband, someone who really cared about others. He was a support who didn’t turn his back from you… Fly high with the mighty, Shaun! You will surely be welcomed.”
Beyond his time in Soil, Glass was a respected figure in the Chicago metal scene, performing with Broken Hope, Repentance, Dirge Within, Sindrome, and numerous other projects throughout a career that spanned more than four decades.
Our thoughts are with Shaun Glass’ family, friends, bandmates, and fans during this difficult time.
