Louisiana death metal outfit BRAT have announced their sophomore album, Manslayer, due out September 25 via Prosthetic Records.
Alongside the announcement, the band has released the album’s lead single, “Manslayer (Hell Hath No Fury),” accompanied by a new music video directed by John Colgan.
Produced, engineered, and mixed by Weekend Nachos’ Andy Nelson at Bricktop Recording in Chicago, and mastered by Brad Boatright (Deadguy, Pig Destroyer), Manslayer follows BRAT’s 2024 debut, Social Grace. The 17-track effort blends death metal, thrash, and hardcore while expanding the band’s signature sound with darker themes.
Lyrically, vocalist Liz Selfish drew inspiration from an unexpected source: country music.
“There’s not a lot of those tropes in death metal,” Selfish said. “I thought that was a really cool perspective and I really liked the storytelling aspect of it.”
Songs like The Chicks’ “Goodbye Earl,” Carrie Underwood’s “Before He Cheats,” and Miranda Lambert’s “Gunpowder & Lead” helped inspire the album’s revenge-driven narrative, which flips traditional extreme metal storytelling by placing women in the role of avenger rather than victim.
Manslayer also marks the first time Selfish handled the album’s lyrics in full, taking over lyric-writing duties while guitarist Brenner Moate focused on composing the music.
“It’s quite new territory for me,” Selfish explained. “I wrote the first song for the album, and I just loved writing… I ended up writing the whole album. Brenner’s main focus is writing music – he wants to write riffs – so it was a nice passing of the torch.”
The album artwork was created by Wes Benscoter, whose past work includes releases by Slayer and Mortician.

According to the band, Manslayer represents a darker evolution of BRAT’s sound and aesthetic while retaining the tongue-in-cheek edge that helped define the group’s early identity.
“We’re evolving the bimboviolence and the campiness by making it all a little bit darker with this album, and a bit more overtly violent,” Selfish said. “I think that will probably reflect in our stage show and our imagery as well, keeping it fun… but definitely progressing into something darker.”
