Adam Martin, guitarist, vocalist, and founding member of The Hooplas, has died following a battle with a rare form of NK/T-cell lymphoma.
The band shared the heartbreaking news on social media, paying tribute to their friend and bandmate:
It is with incredibly heavy hearts that we announce Adam’s passing. He fought valiantly for over a year, and in his final moments he made it very clear that he was not afraid. He showed us what true courage looks like in the face of death. His level of strength and dignity will forever be unmatched. He will live on forever through his family, friends, and music.
Thank you to everyone who has been here with us throughout the years, this band was his entire world. We love you all.
Martin’s diagnosis was first made public last summer after he spent months in the hospital. Initially treated for what doctors believed was an autoimmune disease, he was later diagnosed with the rare and aggressive cancer, which attacked his throat and left him unable to speak or swallow. Despite entering chemotherapy under extremely difficult circumstances, Martin continued to fight, ultimately undergoing a bone marrow transplant at the National Institutes of Health with his cousin serving as his donor.
Throughout his battle, The Hooplas kept fans updated on Martin’s progress while continuing to release music that had been recorded before his illness. Earlier this year, the band shared the single “Venice Riffs,” accompanied by a music video featuring footage from Martin’s journey leading up to his transplant.
The Hooplas also documented the overwhelming support surrounding Martin, including friends shaving their heads in solidarity and countless messages of encouragement from fans across the music community.
Martin’s passion for music remained at the center of everything he did. As the band noted in their final tribute, “this band was his entire world.”
Our thoughts are with Adam Martin’s family, friends, bandmates, and everyone who knew and loved him during this difficult time. Rest in peace.
