Frank Beard of ZZ Top has died, RIP

ZZ Top drummer Frank Beard dies at 77

ZZ Top drummer Frank Beard has died at the age of 77.

The band confirmed the news in a statement from guitarist Billy F Gibbons, who paid tribute to his longtime bandmate and friend.

“Today, Elwood and I lost a great friend and collaborator, and the world lost one of the most naturally innovative drummers and a great and true son of Texas. His signature backbeat was key to keeping ZZ on top.”

Beard died while in hospice care at his ranch in Richmond, TX, surrounded by family. A cause of death has not been disclosed.

Beard joined ZZ Top in 1969 and went on to perform alongside Gibbons and bassist Dusty Hill for more than five decades. His drumming was a key part of the band’s sound across albums including Tres Hombres, Eliminator, Afterburner and Recycler, as well as songs such as “La Grange,” “Tush,” “Gimme All Your Lovin’,” “Sharp Dressed Man” and “Legs.”

The classic lineup remained together until Hill’s death in 2021, after which longtime guitar tech Elwood Francis took over on bass. Beard had remained with the band until recent health issues forced him to step away from touring.

Following Beard’s passing, ZZ Top have canceled their upcoming shows in Salt Lake City and Colorado Springs. The band currently plans to resume its “The Big One! Tour” this weekend with two performances at Austin City Limits in Austin, TX, a venue and city that held special significance for Beard.

ZZ Top were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004.
